Find Your New Look at Happy Megane

Published: October 10, 2019

Looking to change up your look, or simply in the market for a new pair of glasses? Unlike in other parts of the world, getting prescription glasses in Japan does not require health insurance or a prescription. This means, for both tourists and residents, purchasing lenses and frames simply involves walking into a glasses store, no appointment necessary!

Located along the bustling Sunamachi Ginza Shopping District, Happy Megane(Glasses) offers an incredible selection of both major international brands and local Japanese manufacturers. I was greeted by the energetic Mr. Matsuoka, who explained that Happy Megane is part of the Ishizuka Company and has 20 stores across Tokyo. He is one of the three staff who work at the Sunamachi branch and combined they have over 15 years of experience.

Getting a pair of glasses starts with an eye exam (with images, no Japanese reading required), afterwards, you choose your frames, and wait for the lenses to be put in. “If it’s a simple prescription, we can have the glasses ready the same day. However, if it’s a bit more complicated and we don’t already have the lenses in store, it takes up to a week,” he explained. If you prefer contact lenses over glasses, you are in luck, Happy Megane also has a selection of extended wear and daily wear contact lenses.

Happy Megane sells frames for every style and age, including a children’s section. According to Mr. Matsuoka, their clientele is a mix of all ages so they have a lot of different styles on offer. “Our company motto is ‘Individuality is a treasure’, so it’s important our clients find a style that suits them,” he said. Because they have several stores and carry such a big selection, they are also able to offer competitive pricing. Coming from Canada where frames easily cost hundreds of dollars after insurance, I was shocked to see many frames were in the 5000–7000 yen range. What a deal!

Not just limited to glasses, Happy Megane also sells jewellery, including watches, necklaces, earrings, and rings. They offer authentication certificates for diamonds, and I even spotted more than one engagement ring in the display.

After years of appointments to the optometrist, and long waits for prescription lenses, I am so impressed by the efficiency and practical approach of eyecare in Japan. Next time you’re in the market for a new pair of glasses, or simply want to take advantage of the incredible deals, Happy Megane staff will be happy to assist you.
