Ms. Taniguchi is a therapist with experience as a nurse and extensive knowledge of aromatherapy.

First, there’s a consultation, followed by blending a few essential oils of your choice, which will be used for the steam sauna and the massage.

A steam bed made of yellow cypress referred to as ‘Beihiba’

This is an unusual form of cypress material that, unlike traditional cypress wood, doesn’t mold and is easy to clean and maintain. The story behind acquiring this steam bed was very impressive as it took a lot of effort and determination!

Japanese herbs are placed in a clay pot under the bed, which is lined with a towel, creating a steam bath effect.

The steam and heat increase gradually and become intense about 20 minutes into the session, which lasts about 30 minutes. Your chosen oil blend and herbs evaporate with the steam, which may benefit the skin.

Through counseling and casual conversation, they will recommend the massage style that best suits you.

While in the steam bed, you’ll get a head and neck massage; the pressure is intense but very pleasant and relaxing. I hadn’t noticed how tight all the muscles in that area were until it was pointed out.

After the steam bed, there’s an aromatherapy back massage followed by a stomach massage using your chosen oil blend. Ms. Taniguchi goes slowly along the spine, paying extra attention to the muscles around it. The stomach massage felt a little unusual, but it is said to stimulate and improve organ function.

This choice on this particular day was a blend of Japanese oils such as yuzu, sansho, kuromoji, and cedar prepared to create a slightly spicy and citrus-like aroma for enhanced relaxation and rejuvenation.

Depending on your state, you can choose oils that make you feel relaxed or give you more energy if you feel dull. Along with the oil blend, there are Japanese dried herbs—some of which were harvested by acquaintances living in remote areas. This blend is unique to Japan and unlike anything you’ve smelled before.
