“Fukagawa Café Taro,” a restaurant with over 50 years of history,

has been reborn with a new style of combining Japanese and Chinese cuisine, now with an attached café.

The restaurant has two floors. The first floor is a cozy café, while the second is the dining area. Upstairs, there are about 45 seats, and besides serving everyday meals, the space can also be booked for events such as company dinners or birthday parties.

The menu features Chinese dishes —appetizers, main courses, and noodles —as well as Japanese dishes made with seasonal ingredients.

The restaurant is now run by the second generation. It was opened by the current owners’ father more than 50 years ago. At first, it served sushi, but later joined with the Chinese restaurant next door, becoming a larger place with more menu options. As the area and customers changed over time, it gradually turned into the modern Café Taro you see today.

A café was added alongside the restaurant during its April 2025 renovation.

On the first floor, there are plenty of tables too, all with chairs and comfy sofas. The space is filled with plants and has a large window that lets in lots of natural light, creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere, perfect for spending a pleasant time, alone or with company. You can drop by with a friend for a drink, or come on your own to read a book, write, or work on your laptop. Since it stays open throughout the day, many customers order a set meal during lunch and dinner hours, which are generous and satisfying. Hot sandwiches are also available. In the afternoon, it becomes more of a café, attracting many young people who come to enjoy the wide variety of coffee and something sweet.

Sweets made with açai

The açaí yogurt bowl is a very healthy option, something you could easily enjoy every day. It comes in two sizes, and this one is the half-size! Even so, it’s already quite large. I recommend getting the full-size bowl if you want to share it with someone. In the bowl, it’s blended into a smooth, refreshing, sorbet-like texture. On top, there are fresh strawberries and banana slices, while underneath you’ll find Greek yogurt, cereal, and more fruit.

Fruit-filled sweets made with Greek yogurt

The most popular dessert is a hearty plate featuring a generous scoop of Greek yogurt in the center. Around it, you’ll find fresh banana slices, nuts, and assorted berries, while on top of the yogurt, there’s a piece of natural honeycomb that adds just the right touch of sweetness. A very original and satisfying dessert.

Aromatic coffee

The coffee here is smooth and easy to drink. It’s served in this heart-shaped cup, which has a hollow space between the inner wall and the outer surface, so you won’t burn your hands when you hold it. I loved it!

You can also get bento boxes for takeout.

If you don’t have time to sit down for a meal, you can grab a bento from a stand outside the restaurant. This way, you won’t have to wait in line inside, and you can take a delicious meal with you wherever you want.
