“manu&bol” is a bookstore that mainly handles picture books and photography books.
The owner, Mr. Horiuchi, worked as an editor for many years and was surrounded by photography and illustrations. With a strong desire to open an art gallery, Mr. Horiuchi chose Kiyosumi-shirakawa, an area with many galleries and museums, as the location for his store.
In the weeks leading up to the opening of his gallery, he closely observed the kinds of people who walked by the storefront. With a keen awareness of people’s habits and desires, he decided to open a bookstore. That same special attention to people’s interests continues to shape every aspect of the bookstore, from the attentive atmosphere to the thoughtfully curated books.
The store offers a wide variety of picture books and photography books.
Unlike a bigger bookstore, the books here are curated in such a manner that Mr. Horiuchi’s personality comes through. As an avid basketball fan, there is a shelf full of his favorite basketball moments and players caught on camera. The picture books are continuously curated through researching current demand. This research includes speaking with the patrons and learning about what books they seek out.
The store also sells decaffeinated coffee and sundries.
The store’s merchandise is personally curated by Mr. Horuichi to create a truly unique lineup. Depending on your caffeine tolerance, you can choose your coffee packet based on their caffeine percentages. Even those who dislike the taste of decaf may be pleasantly surprised. The decaffeination process is designed to preserve the robust and aromatic flavor of coffee.
“manu&bol” runs a unique program called “Kodomo Shoten” (Children’s Bookstore).
People who wish to support the program can purchase a support card for 1,000 yen at the store or through the online shop. Children visiting with their parents can then select a support card from the board inside the store and use it to purchase a book of their choice.
The children write their words of gratitude on these cards and pin them to the board afterward. This program exemplifies the store’s emphasis on fostering a strong community within its neighborhood. The motivation for running this program is not to make profit but to bring a smile to children’s and parents’ faces alike.
“manu&bol” also publishes a monthly newsletter called “Ehon Shimbun” (Picture Book Newspaper).
It provides information about new releases, recommended picture books for different age groups, and introductions to picture book authors.
This newsletter exemplifies Mr. Horuichi’s attention to detail. He fosters an environment that makes the selection process enjoyable and stress-free. Not only can you read the newsletter to help you decide on your purchase, but you can also pick up a book and start reading it to make sure it’s the right fit for you and your child.
What stood out to me the most about this store was how welcoming it was. Mr. Horuichi always spoke with a smile and made for great conversation. Even if you do not have children or do not particularly have an interest in photo books, there will always be something special for you in this store.
