With over 80 types of instruments, including drum sets, the school caters to a diverse range of students. Rhythmic training is believed to have positive effects on brain activation and motor function improvement. As a result, students of all ages, from infants to seniors, including those with and without disabilities, enjoy attending the classes.

At first glance it looked like instruments and toys were scattered everywhere from common ones like drums or the acoustic guitar, to other unique and unusual ones that you’d never expect to be instruments. The sounds they produce are so varied! For example, the big round drum made a nice deep sound which I personally liked.

The teaching materials, personally crafted by Ms. Tanaka, are designed with vibrant colors to make learning enjoyable. The visually appealing materials enhance the overall learning experience.

Each of the notes of the scale have a corresponding illustrated character that makes it easy to remember. Scales are usually perceived as difficult to read and boring to look at for beginners, but Ms. Tanaka certainly found a way to make it fun to learn and cute to see.

Ms. Tanaka’s vision is to create a space where people of all ages can freely play the available instruments, engage in conversations, perform exercises, and gather through the warmth of music and human connection.

True beginners can even take piano lessons as she takes you through it slowly and patiently. She even has elderly students who started with zero experience!

The instruments used in rhythmic training range from castanets to unique instruments from overseas, drum sets, and even wooden fish, totaling over 80 types. Students have the freedom to choose their favorite instruments, allowing them to learn while having fun.

After trying many different instruments, the one that resonated with me was the blue metal tongue drum (pictured above). The sound resembles that of something heard at a shrine or temple and is healing, pleasant and surprisingly easy to play. Playing it felt meditative.

Music is not just about playing skillfully according to sheet music; it’s also about creating a personal sound using your entire body and all five senses. It adds another layer of enjoyment to the experience of making music.

Ms. Tanaka wanted to avoid the typical restricted and serious style of learning music which makes the experience dull and feel like an obligation. Instead, having fun with it through color, characters, and giving people freedom.

Music and sound are something very primal that dates far back in history. It has the power to bring people together, connect and heal.

Please come and experience the magical power that music can bring!
