Mr. Sugimoto, the third-generation owner, says they sell gougumi tea passed down from the previous generations.

*Gougumi (blending) refers to the process of carefully selecting and combining various types of tea leaves.

Having experienced Mr. Sugimoto’s passion firsthand, I now understand how the traditional technique of gougumi deepens the flavor of the tea.

Akimayaen’s top recommendations are its signature sencha and a premium-grade sencha, specially crafted by 10th-level tea master Mr. Fumio Maeda.

With a tea master involved, it is no surprise that the premium-grade sencha comes highly recommended! I can only imagine the depth of flavor that such expertise brings to each cup.

The final step in the tea production process involves applying heat to dry the tea. A pleasant aroma is produced just before the tea is burnt by slightly increasing the heat intensity beyond the usual level.

The temperature control of the warm water is crucial for unlocking those delightful aromas, something I truly enjoyed during my visit. Being someone who does not drink green tea often, I must say I really enjoyed it.

Handmade accessories are sold here, and ice creams are also available until October.

I thought it was wonderful how they value tradition while also incorporating a modern atmosphere and making efforts to ensure their customers enjoy the experience.

The recommended brewing method is to steep the tea for just under a minute at 70°C. Slowly pouring it afterward enhances its flavor.

The brewing techniques shared by Mr. Sugimoto really elevate the tea experience. Following his guidance made a noticeable difference in flavor.

Akimayaen also offers a service where you can take out small-sized teas (220ml).

The takeaway option makes high-quality tea accessible for those on the go, allowing everyone to enjoy a taste of Akiyamaen.

It was also very meaningful to see this cherished establishment reaching such a significant milestone of 95 years next year! I hope Akiyamaen will continue being the cornerstone of traditional tea culture in Japan.

Please feel free to visit when you can!
