Grilled Horumon in Toyocho

Today, we visited Gekiuma Horumon Damashii, a specialty horumon restaurant in Toyocho known for its delicious grilled offal.

The restaurant even received a Special Excellence Award at the 6th Izakaya Championship!

Just look at the exterior! I love it!

And inside the restaurant…

You can almost feel the atmosphere saying, “The food here is going to be good!”

Here is the manager, Kengo Motinaga.

“The best thing about horumon is that it goes perfectly with beer and other alcoholic drinks,” says Motinaga.

We Asked About the Different Types of Horumon

While Motinaga was preparing the meat, we asked him about the different kinds of horumon.

The meat is sourced from trusted suppliers at the Shibaura Meat Market, with whom the restaurant has built long-standing relationships. Freshness is one of their top priorities.

This is Shimacho, or beef large intestine.

Its satisfyingly chewy texture makes it irresistible.

Next up is Urute.

Urute is cartilage from a cow’s windpipe. Apparently, even among horumon lovers, it is something people either love or don’t. It’s definitely one for the experienced horumon fan!

Now, this looks delicious! Just look at that marbling!!

This cut is called Ichibo, which comes from the rump area of the cow.

It is known for its melt-in-your-mouth tenderness!

The restaurant also serves different cuts of A5-grade Japanese Black Wagyu beef, depending on what is available that day.

With around 20 different varieties of horumon available at any given time, there is plenty to choose from.

This assortment is another great option!

The Chef’s Choice Horumon Mix (Large) is ¥2,068!

Tell Motinaga what you like—or anything you cannot eat—and he will put together an assortment to suit your preferences!

Oh No! Now I Really Want a Beer.

Soon after the restaurant opened at 5:00 p.m., customers started arriving one after another!

You can tell this place is popular!!

Orders quickly began coming in.

Here is the Assorted Namul, priced at ¥770. It is quite a generous portion.

The rich, nutty aroma of sesame oil really whets the appetite!

Now I’m starting to crave a beer!

Here is the Hatsu Sashimi, made with fresh beef heart. This is a dish that can only be served when the meat is exceptionally fresh.

Served with garlic soy sauce, it looks like just the thing to give you an energy boost!

W-Wait… what is this?

DSCF6545 (400x246)

This is how it is grilled! (^^;)

It is called “Super Horumon,” and it is thoroughly coated in a rich miso-based sauce!

Once grilled, you cut it into bite-sized pieces with scissors before eating.

This bold, hearty style is part of what makes horumon so much fun!

Super Horumon is currently available by advance reservation only. Depending on availability from suppliers, the restaurant may not always be able to offer it. Please contact the restaurant in advance to confirm availability.

All around the restaurant, horumon coated in the restaurant’s closely guarded secret sauce sizzles on the grill, filling the air with an irresistible aroma…

Beer, beer… somebody please get me a beer…

That beer belongs to a customer. Unfortunately, I’m here for an interview, so I can’t drink! (;´Д`)

More and More Women Are Visiting!

Around 70–80% of the restaurant’s customers are men, but the number of female customers has been increasing recently!

Apparently, quite a few women who previously did not eat horumon have become fans after trying it here.

Next time, I want to come back as a customer and enjoy the sound of horumon sizzling away on the grill!

With a beer in hand, of course!
