“Music Salon PIANITY,” a music salon where you can enjoy singing along with live piano music.
The Kawashima couple runs the music salon: the husband is a jazz pianist, and the wife is a jazz vocalist.
Mr. Kawashima first discovered jazz through cinema when he was only thirteen. At the same time, he developed a passion for classical music, which led him to begin playing the piano at a young age. Mrs. Kawashima’s path was different. She discovered jazz during her travels around the world and thought it would be wonderful to sing with that kind of music in the background, so she began exploring it further. That passion eventually brought them together.
At first, they worked as freelancers, but because they loved the atmosphere and wanted to gather people who shared their passion for jazz, they decided it made more sense to have their own place rather than rent someone else’s.
At the salon, various events are held on different days. The main highlight is the “Vocal Jam Session.” Guests choose a song, and the husband provides live piano, allowing them to sing along to his performance.
The Kawashima couple performs shows both inside and outside of Pianity, and over the years, they have released music albums together as well as solo projects. At the vocal jam session I attended, Mrs. Kawashima sang one of her original songs and even playfully held out the microphone to the audience so we could join in on the chorus. It turned into a lively, participatory moment that made the whole session even more fun.
At Music Salon PIANITY, you can request any song from the salon’s list even without sheet music. The selection includes a wide variety of genres, such as jazz, Western pop, J-pop, chanson, and many more.
If you’re a jazz lover, you’ll be delighted to know they have a wide repertoire of songs, many in English, as is often the case with jazz, so chances are you’ll recognize quite a few.
If the song you’d like to sing isn’t on the salon’s list, you can bring your own sheet music, and the pianist will play it for you right on the spot. (Sheet music is limited to up to 4 A4 pages per song.)
This is a place where people who love music come together. While it’s definitely more fun if you join in the singing, there’s no pressure to do so if you don’t feel like it. Both men and women come along, most of them in their forties and fifties—people whose children are already grown, so they don’t have to rush back home and can instead enjoy a relaxed evening of jazz.
In addition to the Vocal Jam Sessions, the salon also hosts live performances featuring guest vocalists, concerts by the Kawashima couple’s own duo, and workshops for learning jazz.
They host events almost every day. Some nights feature live shows by jazz singers or bands, while other days offer workshops. Additionally, there are evenings dedicated to beginners who want to sing. Each event costs just 3,200 yen (as of September 2025) and includes one drink.
Music Salon PIANITY is filled with charm that makes music lovers lose themselves in the experience.
Everything is well taken care of and thoughtfully prepared for these sessions. The room is soundproof, so the singing never bothers the neighbors. Since the COVID pandemic, they have been more careful than ever with hygiene measures, such as thoroughly cleaning the microphones after each use.

It’s a very different experience from karaoke boxes, so it’s definitely worth trying at least once!
