The hula dance school “KE‘ALALIKOLEHUA,” is where both children and adults can enjoy traditional Hawaiian dance.
They select popular modern songs like ‘Koali’ and ‘Ke aloha’ which retain a traditional Hawaiian feel for the classes and focus on fun, enjoyable group lessons.
‘Koali’ is a beautiful place in Maui, and ‘Ke aloha’ is a Hawaiian proverb that means ‘Love gives life within.’ The songs and dance movements often express love and gratitude to nature. The atmosphere of the songs and dance is soft, feminine, and light. All the moving around during dance practice makes for a great form of exercise.
Once a year, students can learn directly from a Hawaiian Kumu, meaning teacher or master in Hawaiian. Unique programs, like dancing to English songs, are also offered in the kid’s classes.
Performances by both adults and children are held at public events and sometimes at nursing homes for the elderly. Some teachers can play the ukulele, so it’s also incorporated into events.
The head instructor, Ms. Tomita, is a certified teacher recognized by an established Hawaiian Kumu.
Ms. Tomita is a very passionate teacher who knows much about Hawaiian culture and hula dance. She said their programs were about dancing, community building, and connecting with each other.
Ms. Tomita teaches with great enthusiasm and makes the lessons very enjoyable.
All the hand and arm motions in the hula dance are expressions of nature, such as a flower, a wave, or the sun. It was fun to try these motions in unison with the teacher.
English-speaking staff are available, so international visitors are also very welcome!
Although speaking is not required to learn dance, the teacher mentioned above regarding the English songs can help in English if necessary.
