“Lisa Cafe” is a place where anyone can casually enjoy rakugo performances.
Rakugo is a traditional Japanese form of storytelling in which a single performer uses minimal props—typically a folding fan and a hand towel—to portray multiple characters. The performer brings humorous and engaging stories to life through gestures, expressions, and voice changes.
Unlike traditional arts like Kabuki or Noh, which often use classical or stylized Japanese, rakugo features more conversational and accessible language, making it easier for non-native speakers with some Japanese ability to follow.
At Lisa Cafe, they also host special events such as “Ladies’ Rakugo Gatherings,” exclusively for female guests. A free kimono dressing service is available if you bring your kimono.
According to the owner, most of the customers are male. She started offering a kimono dressing service to make it easier for women to join and feel welcome.
The cafe’s calm, traditional Japanese atmosphere is also a big part of its appeal.
Rakugo performers have three ranks: zenza (apprentice), futatsume (intermediate), and shinuchi (master). At Lisa Cafe, most of the performances are mainly given by futatsume-level rakugo storytellers.
One of the great things I noticed about this venue is that the stage is slightly elevated, so no matter where you’re seated, you’ll have a clear view of the performer—making it easy to stay engaged throughout the show.
Whenever a shinuchi-level performer, Ms. Hayashiya Tsuruko appears, the seats always become full.
