“Ka’u_kitchen,” a place that leaves you feeling like you took a small step towards a healthier you.

Each dish on the menu comes with a brief description and a little note about the ingredients.
The owner and his wife share a strong belief in the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. He runs a small restaurant serving fresh dishes inspired by Hawaiian cuisine, which is where the name Ka’u Kitchen comes from—apparently meaning “My Kitchen.” Right next door, his wife operates a Pilates studio.

The lunch menu at Ka’u_kitchen changes every week. Each set meal is carefully put together, combining a main dish with side dishes, rice, and soup into one well-balanced plate.
The Kiba area is a largely residential neighborhood rather than a business district, making it a great area to explore local restaurants and small dining spots. With so many excellent places to eat across the city, standing out is no easy task. That is why he puts a great deal of effort into keeping things fresh, regularly offering different food options, and giving customers new reasons to choose Ka’u Kitchen again.

Mitsuba (Japanese parsley) and Bell Pepper Ethnic-Style Salad
One of the side dishes on the menu is this light and refreshing salad. It combines the distinctive flavor of mitsuba with the sweetness of bell peppers, while pieces of hard-boiled egg and crunchy almonds add extra texture and richness to the dish.

Japanese-Style Bibimbap
When I visited, the main dish was the Japanese-style bibimbap. The classic Korean rice bowl features ingredients more commonly found in Japanese home cooking, such as soft fried onions, which creates a milder, more comforting flavor while keeping the dish balanced and satisfying.

Chicken Breast Shio Nanban-zuke (lightly salted and marinated in a refreshing vinegar-based sauce)
The tender boiled chicken breast served with colorful vegetables such as bell peppers and fresh red grapefruit, all lightly marinated in a tangy vinegar-based nanban-zuke sauce is a refreshing combination of savory, sweet, and citrus flavors that pairs well with the main dish.

Simmered Potato and Shirataki Noodles
Another small side consisted of simmered potatoes and shirataki noodles, a classic combination often found in Japanese home cooking. Though modest in appearance, its seasoning and comforting texture made it an enjoyable accompaniment that tied the meal together nicely.

Spring Cabbage, Clam, and Bacon Soup
The meal was rounded out with a comforting soup. The sweetness of the cabbage, the briny flavor of the clams, and the savory richness of the bacon came together beautifully, creating a light yet flavorful broth that complemented the rest of the dishes.

What Ka’u_kitchen values is not elaborate, special occasion food, but rather everyday meals that are kind to your body.
As more people embrace healthier lifestyles, healthy food tends to come with a reputation for high prices and premium ingredients. This restaurant takes a different approach, building balanced meals from simple, everyday ingredients. The result is food that tastes good and leaves you feeling like you did something good for your body.
