“Minowa Tabi and Clothing Store” is your one-stop shop for tabi socks (Japanese traditional socks), sumo wrestler clothing, and everyday wear.

As there are very few stores that specialize in sumo wrestler clothing, the shop receives inquiries from customers living far away. The history of this shop is particularly fascinating. The grandfather of the current owner ran a store for sumo wrestlers during the Taisho era, selling tabi and traditional undergarments. The owner’s father continued the business in the Showa era, driven by his love of downtown festival culture. At a time when specialty shops like this were rare due to the war and its aftermath, keeping such a unique store alive was quite remarkable.
Festival tabi boots are also a popular item at the store. With cushioned soles, they are comfortable enough to wear just like a pair of sneakers. Located near Ryogoku, the heart of Japan’s sumo world, this shop has long attracted customers from far and wide. Even today, many regulars continue to visit for its high-quality tabi and hard-to-find large sizes. Thanks to its long history of serving sumo wrestlers, the shop carries sizes that most tabi and sock stores simply do not offer, and regular customers keep coming back generation after generation.

These are not the typical tabi worn with a kimono, but rather the sturdy festival-style tabi designed for comfortable outdoor walking. They come in a wide range of sizes and even allow you to adjust the fit around the calf. With multiple hooks and fastening positions, you can find the perfect fit. Every detail has clearly been thought through!
The store also carries a wide range of everyday items, including hand towels, regular towels, socks, aprons, shirts, and trousers.
The tenugui (hand towels) instantly reminded me of summer festivals, where people tuck them into the obi of their yukata while dancing Bon Odori and use them to wipe away the summer heat. Many of the patterns and designs are original creations passed down through the family, making them even more special.
Minowa Tabi & Clothing Store also offers a custom-order service for women’s colored tabi in your preferred size. Please note that the store does not provide alteration or repair services for customer-owned clothing.
The owner hopes the shop will become better known in the neighborhood and continue serving the community for many years to come. Long-time residents know its history and traditions, but many newcomers to the area have never heard of it.
The shop itself is humble and wonderfully authentic, with her old sewing machine still sitting on the worktable where garments are made. If a summer festival is in your plans, their tabi are a must.
