“Kids Programming School Switch” opened in 2016 for kindergarten seniors and elementary school students.
At “Kids Programming School Switch,” some children create games, some move characters, and others build their own unique worlds.

The school currently offers courses in Scratch, Minecraft, and Python (for junior high and high school students).
Each lesson lasts 90 minutes. The first 15 minutes are spent practicing typing with an original typing app developed by the school.
The typing app allows students to unlock backgrounds and button styles to incentivize improvement. Minecraft allows students to code in game, which helps bridge the gap between creativity and logic. Scratch is a program that allows students to make games and animations with the help of its easy interface which sets the educational foundation for more complex coding in Python.
In the Minecraft course, children use programming to create buildings and systems from an empty world. This naturally helps develop their creativity.
With the help of the school’s worksheet, I built a house in Minecraft and then input some code to make the words “Amy’s House” pop up on my screen. As an occasional Minecraft player, I was grateful to be taught this new trick. Going through this activity made me remember just how fun learning can be when given the right tools.
Kids Programming School Switch does not use a fixed textbook.
Lessons are based on an individual learning record for each child, and instructors provide personal support as they progress.
At the start of every lesson, children use paper and pencil to plan their activities on the computer. Doing this gives the students agency which in turn encourages them to actively engage in their work. This form of self-lesson planning helps children to learn how to execute a plan while developing their critical thinking skills.
“Kids Programming School Switch” holds an annual presentation event where students can show what they have learned.
The school also uses a badge system in regular lessons. Children earn badges as they move up through the levels, helping them stay motivated and enjoy learning toward their goals.
When the students present their work annually, a common reaction from parents is that they had no idea just how much their children had learned. Badges and levels provide rewards-based drive for the children. The students enjoy tracking their progress, and parents like to see these results.
The Minecraft course is especially popular.
