“Bigfoot English School” values a learning environment where English is not forced throughout the lesson. Instead, Japanese is used when helpful, so students can learn comfortably and at a steady pace.

They incorporate a wide variety of board games and similar activities, creating a setup that helps students start speaking English naturally. Mr. Suzuki, the owner and sole teacher, laughs that “Big Foot” comes from his large feet—but for him, it really means taking a big step forward. He chose the name to reflect that, though challenging, learning English is an important step in today’s working world, even for Japanese learners.

Mr. Suzuki’s lessons reflect his childcare experience in Seattle, along with the knowledge and skills he has gained as a qualified childcare professional. His classes are filled with engaging materials like toys, drawings, anime videos, and manga to keep students motivated. During my visit, he showed me several games and activities—and I honestly had a blast!

Most students are in elementary to junior high school, but the school welcomes a wide age range, from babies to seniors, with classes divided by age and level. Class sizes are typically small, with around 5 to 8 students per class. There is no set age or level to join. Some teenagers come for exam support, while others just drop by to play, yet end up picking up English naturally. Others focus on specific goals like pronunciation, and there is even an adult class. Private online lessons are also available.

Lessons cover speaking and listening, as well as reading and writing. Also, having been born in the U.S. and now living in Japan, he is fluent in both languages and deeply familiar with both cultures. This allows him to share real insights into the differences between American and Japanese culture with his students, adding an extra layer of value to his lessons.

At this school, children are encouraged to come whenever they want and can, so it never feels like an obligation. Parents can feel at ease knowing their kids are well cared for and returned safe and sound. If you would like your children to learn English through play, you can be sure they will be in the best hands with Mr. Suzuki!
