※This time, we revisited the shop to introduce its latest developments and new services since our previous feature.
Just a one-minute walk from Monzen-Nakacho Station, Totenko Fukagawa is a Chinese restaurant located on the 5th floor of the Akafudado Fukagawa Store building. For many years, it has been a beloved dining destination for local residents.
When we recently visited the restaurant for the first time in a while, we found a space that felt quite different from before.
Yet, its dedication to quality cuisine and warm relationships with local customers remain unchanged.
Some people may have the impression that Chinese restaurants are somewhat formal or are mainly places for banquets and course dining.
However, after its recent renovation, Totenko Fukagawa offers a welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy to stop by even for an everyday meal.
A Fresh New Look: The Renovated Interior
Now in its 57th year, Totenko Fukagawa has long been part of the Monzen-Nakacho community, sharing its history with local residents.
Previously, the restaurant featured a calm interior with red tones as its main design element.
During its renovation in the summer of 2025, the atmosphere was completely transformed. The result is a bright and open space that feels inviting even to first-time visitors.
“Most of our customers in the past were from older generations. With this renovation, we wanted to create a restaurant that younger people would also feel comfortable dining here,” says Mr. Abe, who kindly spoke with us during our visit.
In addition to the spacious restaurant area, the restaurant also offers private rooms suitable for small groups. These rooms can accommodate a wide range of occasions, including family celebrations, family introductions, reunions, and seminars.
The banquet hall can also be divided into sections, allowing the space to be adjusted according to the number of guests.
From casual meals to life’s most important celebrations, the renewed interior provides a comfortable setting for every occasion.

Chinese Cuisine for All Ages
Since its founding, Totenko has been guided by a simple philosophy:
“Chinese cuisine prepared by Japanese chefs for Japanese tastes.”
While respecting the authentic appeal of Chinese cuisine, the restaurant carefully adjusts its flavors to suit Japanese palates.
Rather than emphasizing strong spices, aromas, or seasonings, the focus is placed on overall balance and harmony. As a result, the dishes are enjoyed by a wide range of guests, from young children to senior diners.
Of course, the restaurant will accommodate requests such as extra spice whenever possible. However, its signature style remains approachable and easy to enjoy for everyone.
Some people associate Chinese cuisine with strong flavors, heavy oil, or intense spiciness. At Totenko, the goal is different: to create dishes rich in umami while remaining accessible to diners of all ages.
It is the kind of cuisine that brings family and friends together around one table, allowing everyone to enjoy their favorite dishes.

Lunch Options to Match Your Schedule
On weekdays, the lunch crowd includes many people working in the neighborhood.
For those stopping in during a busy workday, individual dishes such as fried rice and yakisoba are particularly popular. They allow guests to enjoy a satisfying meal even within a limited lunch break.
For diners looking to sample a variety of dishes or enjoy a more leisurely lunch, the restaurant also offers lunch sets and lunch courses.
The “Irodori” lunch set presents a selection of dishes served together on a tray, allowing guests to enjoy multiple flavors at once.
The “Nishiki” lunch course is served in three stages. Beginning with appetizers and dim sum, followed by a main dish and dessert, it offers a more relaxed dining experience. For an additional ¥550, guests can upgrade to shark fin soup.
For days when you’d like to slow down and enjoy your lunch a little longer, it is an appealing choice.
Whether you prefer a quick individual dish or a more elaborate lunch experience like Irodori or Nishiki, there is an option to suit your schedule and mood.

Three Recommended Dishes for First-Time Visitors
“If it’s your first visit, these are definitely dishes I’d recommend trying,” says Mr. Abe.
His top three recommendations are:
- Spring Rolls
- Sweet and Sour Pork
- Crispy Noodles with Thick Sauce
Among them, the sweet and sour pork is one of Totenko’s signature dishes. Crispy fried pork is coated with a rich black vinegar sauce.
During the interview, we had to ask an important question:
“Does it contain pineapple?”
The answer was simple:
“No.”
Sweet and sour pork often sparks debate over whether pineapple belongs in the dish. At Totenko, no pineapple is used. Instead, the recipe highlights the depth and richness of black vinegar.
The flavor is well balanced rather than overly sour, making it popular with both adults and children.
Another favorite is the crispy noodles topped with savory sauce. Golden-brown noodles are generously covered with a rich sauce packed with the flavors of the ingredients.

Choosing one of these dishes is a great way to start exploring Totenko’s menu.
A Restaurant Where Conversations Happen
Mr. Abe began working at the Fukagawa branch in April 2025.
Before that, he worked at Totenko locations in Shinjuku and Omiya. Since moving to Monzen-Nakacho, he has noticed how much closer the relationship with customers feels.
“In Shinjuku, there weren’t many opportunities to chat with customers. Here, casual conversations happen all the time.”
This friendliness reflects the unique charm of Monzen-Nakacho’s traditional downtown culture.
Customers occasionally even bring souvenirs or small gifts for the staff.
Rather than simply serving food and ending the interaction there, relationships are built through conversation over time. This strong connection with the community is one of the restaurant’s defining characteristics.
Many loyal customers have continued to visit for decades.
Its deep roots in the local community and its emphasis on personal connections may be one of the reasons the restaurant continues to be loved after so many years.

“We Want People to Come Up to the Fifth Floor and Give Us a Try”
“We want younger generations to get to know Totenko.”
With that goal in mind, Mr. Abe participated in the local restaurant-hopping event, “Monzen-Nakacho Bar Street.”
During the event, 168 guests visited the restaurant, many of them first-time customers. It became a valuable opportunity for people who had never dined at Totenko before to discover what the restaurant has to offer.
“Many guests told us how much they enjoyed both the food and the beautiful interior,” Mr. Abe recalls.
Although the restaurant is located on the fifth floor of the Akafudado building, a familiar landmark to local residents, first-time visitors may simply need a reason to come upstairs.
But once they take the elevator to the fifth floor, they are greeted by a bright and welcoming space.
“More than anything, I hope people will come and try the food at least once,” says Mr. Abe.
Starting with lunch is an excellent choice. Try the spring rolls, sweet and sour pork, or crispy noodles. If you enjoy them, return to explore other dishes or one of the restaurant’s courses.
It’s a place that offers different ways to enjoy Chinese cuisine depending on your mood and schedule.

▲Lunch menu. In addition to the Irodori and Nishiki sets, options include the Shark Fin Gozen and Noodles & Rice Set menus.

▲Dinner menu. A variety of course meals are available, including the signature Braised Shark Fin Course.

▲À la carte and dessert menu. Ideal for guests who would like to try individual dishes at their own pace.
A New Interior, the Same Beloved Flavors
With its recent renovation, Totenko Fukagawa has entered a new chapter.
The restaurant has invested in creating a space that feels welcoming to younger generations, while maintaining the qualities that have made it beloved for decades: Chinese cuisine tailored to Japanese tastes and warm relationships with local customers.
Whether you’re enjoying:
- A lunch by yourself
- A meal with family or friends
- A special celebration marking an important milestone
Totenko Fukagawa offers a setting suited to every occasion.
If you’ve ever felt that Chinese restaurants seem a little formal or intimidating, this may be the perfect opportunity to stop by for lunch and discover a different experience.
Enjoy the renewed atmosphere and the timeless flavors that have made Totenko a local favorite for generations.
After the Interview
What stood out most during this interview was how often Mr. Abe spoke about wanting younger people to visit.
Many people know the name Totenko but still associate it primarily with banquets and formal course meals. Before the interview, I shared a similar impression and thought of it as a restaurant reserved for special occasions.
However, I learned that the restaurant also offers a wide variety of casual lunch options, making it easy to visit for an everyday meal.
Personally, the dish that caught my attention most was Mr. Abe’s recommended sweet and sour pork.
The moment I heard, “It doesn’t contain pineapple,” I wanted to try it even more.
Next time, I plan to order the sweet and sour pork along with the crispy noodles topped with thick sauce.
If you find yourself in Monzen-Nakacho, be sure to visit the fifth floor of the Akafudado Fukagawa building and experience both the restaurant’s newly renovated interior and the flavors that have been loved for generations.
