Just a one-minute walk from Exit A4 of Morishita Station, you’ll find Megane no Miura, a neighborhood optical shop that has been serving and supporting the local community for decades.
Nine years have passed since we first introduced the shop through Kotomise. This time, we returned to speak with Mr. Miura following the store’s recent renovation.
Completed around 2023, the renovation transformed the interior into a bright, clean space centered around a simple white color palette. Some longtime customers were even surprised by the change, commenting:
“It feels much bigger now!”
Yet while the appearance of the shop has changed, some things have remained exactly the same.
One of them is Mr. Miura’s commitment to listening carefully to each customer and recommending glasses that truly suit their lifestyle.
For him, glasses are not simply about helping people see clearly. They are about helping people see comfortably.
During this visit, we spoke with Mr. Miura about the newly renovated store, his approach to finding the right eyewear for each customer, and the town of Morishita, a neighborhood he has watched evolve for more than half a century.
A Brighter Store, the Same Comfortable Atmosphere
As part of the building’s renovation, Megane no Miura also underwent a complete interior makeover.
The previous design featured a large amount of glass, giving the store a distinctive appearance. Today, the space feels brighter, cleaner, and more open, with white tones throughout.
“Since we had to temporarily leave the store during the construction, we decided to take that opportunity to refresh everything,” Mr. Miura explained.
The layout was redesigned, and the wallpaper and fixtures were renewed. Longtime customers often remark:
“Wow, it feels much bigger now!”
Of course, the actual size of the store has not changed.
It’s remarkable how much the impression of a space can transform through changes in color, layout, and presentation alone.
The renovated shop feels welcoming even to first-time visitors while preserving the comfortable atmosphere that longtime customers have always appreciated.

Over 50 Years in Business: A Philosophy That Has Never Changed
Megane no Miura is a family-run optical shop founded by Mr. Miura’s father.
Mr. Miura himself entered the eyewear industry at the age of 18. Over the past 50 years, he has devoted himself to helping customers find the eyewear that best suits their individual needs.
Throughout his long career, there is one principle he has always valued above all else.
It is something he mentioned repeatedly during our conversation:
“First, listen to the customer.”
What kind of work do they do?
When and where do they usually wear their glasses?
Do they drive?
How often do they use smartphones or computers?
A vision test alone cannot determine the perfect pair of glasses.
The most important thing is understanding each person’s daily life.
When Kotomise first interviewed Mr. Miura years ago, he also emphasized the importance of learning what customers want to achieve with their glasses.
That belief remains unchanged today.

Choosing Lenses May Really Mean Choosing a Lifestyle
One topic that especially stood out during our conversation was lens selection.
To be honest, before this interview, I only knew about progressive lenses.
However, as Mr. Miura explained, I learned that there are many different types of lenses designed for different lifestyles, including intermediate-distance lenses, indoor-use lenses, and lenses suited for computer work.
At one point, noticing that I was having trouble understanding the differences, Mr. Miura smiled, took out some explanatory materials, and patiently walked me through them.
“Progressive lenses work this way, while intermediate-distance lenses are designed differently.”
Thanks to his explanation, I left the interview with a much deeper understanding of eyewear than I had before.
At the very least, I was no longer someone who only knew about progressive lenses.
As smartphones and computers have become a bigger part of everyday life, the role of glasses has changed as well.
Glasses are no longer only about seeing distant objects clearly.
They can help people:
- Work more comfortably
- Read more easily
- Make cooking easier
Choosing lenses that match a person’s lifestyle has become increasingly important.
Then Mr. Miura summed up his philosophy in one simple sentence:
“Being able to see and being comfortable to see are two different things.”
Those words became the inspiration for this article’s title.
A good pair of glasses is not defined only by how clearly you can see into the distance.
What truly matters is whether the glasses fit the way a person lives.
That is where their real value lies.

▲ While taking photos during the interview, I unexpectedly found myself stopping to admire the display. Be careful. Before you know it, you may find yourself searching for the perfect pair.
What a Neighborhood Optician Can Offer
Today, there are many places where people can get glasses quickly and conveniently.
Many readers have probably used these services, and each type of store has its own advantages.
So what makes Megane no Miura unique?
Mr. Miura believes the answer lies in one thing:
“I think it’s the amount of time we spend with each customer.”
Single-vision lenses can often be prepared relatively quickly. However, when it comes to progressive or intermediate-distance lenses, Mr. Miura takes the time to understand each customer’s lifestyle before making recommendations.
His support does not end when the glasses are purchased.
Adjustments, consultations, and follow-up care are all important parts of helping customers continue to use their glasses comfortably for years.
One especially important step is the fitting process when the glasses are delivered.
Even small adjustments around the nose and ears can significantly affect how comfortable glasses feel to wear.
Selling a pair of glasses is not the end of the relationship.
Continuing to support customers afterward is something that a neighborhood optician can provide precisely because of the trust built over time.

Growing Together with Morishita
Naturally, our conversation eventually turned to the town of Morishita itself.
Mr. Miura has been involved in local shopping street activities for many years and has witnessed the neighborhood change over time.
He remembers a time when Morishita had bookstores, fruit shops, clothing stores, toy stores, and many other small businesses that supported everyday life for local residents.
As the years passed, the appearance of the town changed.
The development of subway lines brought greater convenience and changed the flow of people through the area. At the same time, some traditional neighborhood shops gradually disappeared.
Even so, Mr. Miura remains committed to the community.
“I want to continue doing things that are helpful for the local area.”
Relationships with customers and connections within a neighborhood are not built overnight. They grow through years of trust and communication.
Perhaps the reason Megane no Miura has continued for more than 50 years is because it has always valued the personal connections Mr. Miura has built through his work.

Some Things Never Change
The renovation has given the store a fresh, brighter appearance.
The selection of glasses has expanded, and the way people use their eyes has changed dramatically with the widespread use of smartphones and computers.
The scenery of Morishita has also changed greatly since Mr. Miura first opened the shop.
Yet one thing remains unchanged.
The importance of listening carefully to each customer.
Understanding how they spend their days, what challenges they face, and the situations in which they need glasses most.
Throughout our interview, Mr. Miura repeatedly said:
“Listening first is the most important thing.”
That is why the glasses he recommends are not simply designed to make distant objects appear clearer.
They help people work more comfortably.
They help people read more easily.
They help people enjoy everyday activities, even something as simple as taking a walk.
They are glasses designed around each person’s lifestyle, glasses that help people see comfortably.
The store may look different today, but the care and dedication behind every pair of glasses remain exactly the same.

<Editor’s Note>
The purpose of this follow-up interview was originally to learn about the store’s renovation.
However, before long, our conversation expanded to stories about old Morishita, the development of the subway system, my hometown, and even my hobby of collecting ballpoint pens.
At one point, Mrs. Miura joined the conversation as well, and the discussion flowed so naturally that it was hard to believe we had only just met.
Yet, no matter where the conversation wandered, it always found its way back to glasses.
During the interview, my own eyesight also became a topic.
“Don’t those contact lenses feel dry?”
“How is your current prescription?”
Before I realized it, the interview had turned into a casual consultation.
Of course, it was still an interview.
But on my way home, I found myself thinking that it had been a long time since I had considered my own eyesight so seriously.
What stood out most to me was Mr. Miura’s ability to listen.
Not only does he listen to questions about glasses, but he also naturally learns about each customer’s lifestyle, hobbies, and work.
That ability is what allows him to provide recommendations that truly match each individual.
The reason so many customers continue to visit Megane no Miura year after year may not be because of technical skill alone.
It may also be because of Mr. Miura’s personality, the feeling that this is someone you can comfortably turn to for advice.
